California & Vermont Low-Lead Requirements & Exemptions THE SALE, INSTALLATION, OR USE OF NON-COMPLIANT BRASS MATERIAL IN CALIFORNIA OR VERMONT AFTER JANUARY 1, 2010 IS UNLAWFUL Effective January 1, 2010, legislation in California and Vermont prohibited the sale ordistribution of products for use in potable water systems, unless those products are essentially “lead free.” While the standards in the laws in those states vary slightly, both states define “lead free for these purposes as: • not more than 0.2 percent lead when used with respect to solder and flux, and• “not more than a weighted average of 0.25 percent when used with respect to the wettedsurfaces” of pipes and pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and fixtures.
